Provides prenatal genetic counseling to patients/families under the direction of maternal-fetal medicine specialists. Assists with coordination of services for patients/families including amniocentesis, blood work, and test for prenatal diagnosis. Manages the operations of the Genetic Services office. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our Mission, Values, and Mercy Service Standards.
a. Acknowledges and maintains the right to privacy and confidentiality.
b. Adheres to departmental policies related to safety, infection control and biohazardous waste.
c. Demonstrates appropriate use and sanitation of equipment.
d. Maintain a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment of patients/families in accordance with established department/hospital standards.
e. Maintain established departmental policies and procedures, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
Coordination of Services
a. Coordinate scheduling of counseling and other prenatal diagnostic tests including amniocentesis, blood tests, as appropriate.
b. Participate in the development of policy, procedure and practice standards as part of a team including Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists, Geneticists, Cytogeneticists, Sonographers and others as appropriate.
c. Participate in development of policies designed to meet service commitments. Agree to adhere to policies as appropriate.
d. Oversees staffing and scheduling coverage for Genetic Counseling services.
e. Serve as liaison between Genetic Services office and other departments.
f. Notify Office Administrator of patient complaints.
g. Assess needs for genetic counseling services and develop market strategies.
a. Monitor and ensure accuracy of patient's medical record as relates to genetic counseling, maintain required reports, records, statistics, lab results and diagnostic study reports.
b. Assist with research studies/protocols. Participate in the design, patient recruitment, data collection, data entry and data analysis of clinical research projects.
c. Participate in the medical education of residents and medical students including during counseling
sessions and didactic lectures.
d. Set the curriculum of genetic lectures for residents and medical students.
e. Perform medical record reviews quarterly.
a. Provide prenatal genetic counseling and education to patients/families.
b. Notify patient accounts/billing office in a timely fashion of patient encounters. Assist billing office, staff and physician to insure that timely and accurate billing is performed.
c. Develop patient education materials and programs, which meet the needs of the patients.
d. Participate in meetings as assigned.
e. Be familiar with corporate values and commitment to service excellence of St. John's Mercy Medical Center.
f. Participate in the hiring and training of staff related to Genetic Services.
g. Supervise counseling skills of entry level genetic counselors.
h. Identify opportunities for staff development.
a. Ensure adequate communication to consulting physician and patients and families including summary of consultation, results of tests/lab work (excluding Ultrasounds) and recommended follow-up as appropriate.
b. Maintains record of outstanding or pending tests and monitors process to ensure results are obtained and communicated to patient and referring physicians in a timely manner.
a. Enhance professional growth and development through educational programs, current literature, inservice, meetings and workshops.
b. Maintain knowledge and awareness of new and innovative approaches to patient care in realm of prenatal genetic counseling and diagnosis; introduce new policy/procedure of testing as appropriate to provide up-to-date, comprehensive care to patients. Qualifications: Because you're committed to excellence, you understand the importance of being properly prepared for your role at Mercy. Education: MS/MA in Genetic Counseling or Human/Medical genetic required.
Licensure: Board certification or Board eligible (American Board of Genetic Counselors or American Board of Medical Genetics). If Board eligible, must sit for and pass the exam as soon as it is offered post-graduation.
Other: Must possess excellent people skills and is able to communicate in verbal and non-verbal manner with patients/families, co-workers and physicians. Must have strong teamwork skills and be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
